To a friend, grieving

My friend,

I am in shock- your mother's obituary is in today's paper.

My heart goes out to you. I too have lost a parent - they take with them a piece of our hearts.

However, you will forgive me if I am somewhat confused -- "close" friends seems to indicate that you would at least have told me she was seriously ill in our last telephone conversation ten days before her death.

But then haven't I been reluctant to admit to myself that lately our only contact is when you need my "help" in the business of your life.

This realisation pains me even more than your mother's death.
